거제 외도널서리
국내에서 가장 맑고 깨끗한 해수를 자랑하는 거제도 끝자락에 구조라 해변을 끼고 작은 마을이 있다. 아기자기한 마을을 뒤로하고 바다를 바라보는 땅을 보여주며 최 회장은 나의 농장 ‘파머스대디’에서 깊은 인상을 받았다며 그와 같은 가든카페를 의뢰하였다. 클라이언트는 1년에 100만명이 방문한다는 거제도의 명물 외도 보타니아를 개인소유하고 있는 분이 아니신가? 1969년 섬 개척을 우연히 시작한 이래 밀감농장과 돼지농장을 연이어 실패하고 해마다 겪는 태풍과 그로인한 좌절을 딛고, 50년만에 땅 위의 천국이라 불리는 아름다운 해상공원 외도를 가꾸신 분이시다. 처음 방문한 그날. 자생하고 있던 제멋대로 뻗어있는 가이스카 향나무의 야생성에 반해, 카페입구에 도착할 때까지 60m 넘는 길 양쪽에 가이스카를 널서리 대표수종으로 식재하였고, 그 뒤로는 벽돌담을 세워서 카페입구에 도착 할 때까지 정원이 보이지 않도록 했다. 모든걸 한번에 보여주지 않고 비밀스러움을 간직한 듯 디자인한 것이다. 그린하우스 안에 들어서면 7.5m의 높은 층고와 넓은 내부에 많은 이들이 놀라곤 한다. 그리고 그때서야 창 너머로 보이는 장엄한 바다풍경에 다시 한번 더 놀라게 된다. 여름의 태풍에 견디기 위해 철골구조와 3중 단열유리로 내부를 보호해야 했으며 목조 트러스 구조마감에 셀리엄과 박쥐란 등 다양한 식물군들이 구조물에 매달려 자라고 있다. 또한 9백여평 (3000m²)의 정원에는 아왜나무를 비롯 목수국, 포니테일, 동백나무… 등 50여종의들꽃이 계절에 따라 아름답게 피고 진다. 정원을 둘러싸고 있는 세동의 건물 중 바다를 향하고 있는 화이트 하우스에서는 플라워 클라스가 열리고 파티쉐가 구운 달콤한 디저트와 함께 크고 작은 행사들이 다양하게 벌어지곤 한다. 이곳은 이제 외도 보타니아의 전설을 만들어 내신 최 회장의 바램처럼 관강객들이 줄이어 다녀가는 해변의 명소가 되어가고 있다. 꿈 같은 바램이었다. 밤이면, 외도널서리는 바닷가 등대처럼… 구조라 해변을 끊임없이 비추었으면 하는… 바램이다.

GEOJE OEDO NURSERY
On the edges of Geoje island, known for having cleanest air and clearest ocean shores in Korea, a small village sits beside Gujora beach. With his back to the small village spread behind us, Chairman Choi showed me a site facing the ocean and said that my farmhouse, “Farmer’s Daddy,” had left a deep impression and wanted to build a garden café just like it. Isn’t this client the owner of Oedo Botania, a popular landmark in Geoje island that is visited by million tourists annually? Coincidentally starting to develop the island in 1969, she spent 50 years creating the beautiful floating park, also known as a heaven on earth, despite consecutive failures in citrus farming and swine farming as well as dealing with annual typhoons. On the first visit, after discovering and falling in love with the Kaizukas thriving wildly and freely sprouting out their branches, I chose them as the nursery’s main species and planted them on both sides of the 60m-long main road that stretches from the entrance to the café. Behind the greenery, stonewalls were raised to block views of the garden to visitors walking down the main path until they reach the café. It was a design cherishing the secrecy and mysteriousness. Entering the greenhouse, many people are awed by the spaciousness and the 7.5m-high floor height. And it is after that where they are surprised again by the breathtaking ocean view beyond the glass walls. In order to withstand summer typhoons, steel structures and triple-layer-insulation glasses were used to protect the encapsulating space. Various plants, such as Selloums and Staghorn ferns hang down from a structure connected to the structural timber truss finishes. Also, in the 3000m² garden, 50 species of wild flowers bloom and fall according to season along with other plants, incluing Awabuki, Panicle Hydrangea, Ponytail grass, and Camellia. Among the three structures wrapping around the garden, flower class and various sizes of events are held along with sweetdesserts baked and served by a patissier in the white glasshouse facing the ocean. As Chairman Choi, who made the legendary Oedo Botania, wished for, the site is now becoming a landmark among tourists getting in line for a visit. It was something I wished for in my dreams. At night, Like a light house on ocean shores, I hope Oedo Nursery will shine an eternal light upon the Gujora shores.
