우리 주위에는 크고 작은 형태의 memorial 이 있다. 특히, 한국은 대부분 주거지에서 멀리 떨어져 있다. 접근하기 어려울 뿐 아니라… 혐오시설(unpleasant facility)로 인식되어 있어 배척(exclude) 되기까지 한다. 사랑하는 이가 묻혀 있는데도, 몇 년 동안 수차례 방문했는데도 낯설다. 더욱이 자주 못 오는듯해 죄스럽기까지 하다. 흩어져있는 가족과 형제들이 모처럼 모여도 편하게 차 한잔하고 얘기를 나눌 곳도 없는 곳이 많다. 오래 있기는 더 어려운 환경이다. 실내는 대부분 어둡고 봉안당(charnel house) 함이 유리로 되어있지만… 오픈되어있어 어수선하기까지 하다. 왜 그럴까? Memorial은 죽어야 가는 곳이다. 우리는 죽은 자만이 아닌, 살아있는 사람을 위한 공간이기도 해야한다'' 고 생각했다. 죽기 전에 미리 추억을 쌓는 곳. 곳곳에 이야기가 있고… 낭만이 배어있는 곳. 해서, 자주 가고 싶은 곳. 더 머무르고 싶은 곳, 사색하고, 위로 받을 수 있는… 전혀 새로운 개념의 memorial을 계획하게 된 것이다.





There are various sized memorials around us. Especially in Korea, these memorials are far away from residential areas. Memorials are not only hard to approach but also recognized as an unpleasant facility that is excluded from our society. Even though these are places where our loved ones are buried and a place we visit yearly, it is a foreign and unfamiliar place. Moreover, I am ridden with guilt as I do not visit often. Even if our scattered families come together, there are not a lot of places where we can talk and have a cup of tea. It is a difficult environment to stay for long periods of time. The space inside the Charnel house is mostly dark and made out of glass and also very cluttered. Why is this? “A memorial is a place where the dead lives. We have to create an area for not only the dead but also for the living,“ I thought. A place to create memories before death. A place where stories are told… where romance permeates. Thus, a place where you want to visit. A place where you want to stay. A place where you can ponder and be comforted… This is how we planned a completely new concept of a memorial.
