Vietnam 수도 하노이. 더욱이 공항에서 멀지 않은 곳에 서커스대학을 비롯 4개의 예술대학에 둘러싸여있는 공유지가 있었다. Asian game을 유치한 베트남은 이곳에 한국의 동숭동 대학로와 같이 젊은이들의 모임의 장소, 젊음의 메카를 만들고 싶어했다. 예술과 문화와 놀거리가 상존하는 곳. 영화와 연극상영관, Art book Shop, 그리고 약간의 화방들과 이색적인 카페와 전람회가 열리고 다양한 먹거리가 모여있는 곳. 해서, 자연스레 젊은이들이 모여들어 젊음의 열기들로 넘쳐나는 그림을 우린 그려 나아갔다. 이것은 베트남 중앙정부 차원에서도 원했던 것이다. 우리는 베트남 문화부장관과 관계자들, CJ측과 논의를 거듭한 결과 기존에 있던 수영장은 리모델링과 재해석을 통해 야외 상영관과 축제의 장으로 변모시키기로 하였고, 4개의 예술대학에서 접근이 쉽도록 여러 개의 출입동선을 만들어 나갔다. 예술대학 주변을 보면 그저 수업과 학점관리만 하는 단순한 자세에서 벗어나 예술대학들답게 적극적으로 다양한 경험을 찾고, 참여해 나간다면 예술가로서, 디자이너로서 크나큰 밑거름이 될 거라 믿었다. 더욱이 아시안게임에 참여하는 젊은 선수들이나 관광객들과 함께 어울려 정보를 교환하고 좋은 친구 만들기 프로그램을 통해 다른 나라의 문화(文化)를 접하고 습득할 수 있는 유니크한 공간이 되어가기를 원했다. 컨테이너(실제 컨테이너가 아닌 형태가 닮은..)들이 어느 곳에선 붙고 어디에선 얹혀지며 또 다른 곳에선 떨어져 틈을 만들고 하며 공간을 형성해 나갔다. 한 유니트가 얹혀진 곳에선 높은 천정고와 함께 개방감이 평소 학교캠퍼스 생활과는 또 다른 다양하고 다이내믹한 공간에서 충분히 즐겼으면 했다. 유니트가 다운 된 곳에서는 버스킹 음악이나 퍼포먼스..등 공연이 가능케 했으며, 옥상 루프탑에서는 Green속에서 산책이나 휴식은 물론이고 롤러블레이드 같은 놀이를 함께하는 공간이어야 했다. 이곳에서는 거의 모든 종류의 미술 디자인 용품과 책을 파는 곳이 4개층 곳곳에 흩어져 있으며 이곳 예술대학 학생들은 할인혜택을 받을 수 있으면 했고...CJ 스크린 상영관이 10개가 있다. 층간과 공간 사이사이마다 F&B, 카페, 크고 작은 Asia, Europe Dining들이 스타일리쉬하게 곳곳에 배치되어 종합 시네마 타운으로서 손색없는 볼륨을 갖추어 나갔다. 더욱이 주말이면 이곳 스퀘어에서 과일이나 채소 그리고 집에서 만든 빵, 쿠키, 잼, 등도 판매하는 그린마켓도 열렸으면 했다. 모든 젊은이들이 즐겨찾고 어울리며 수많은 디자인행사와 이벤트를 접할 수 있는 곳. 해서, 디자이너들 사이에서 좋은 文化공간으로 평가받는 곳이고 싶었다. 하지만, 이 모든 꿈과 노력들이 Vietnam 정부의 Asian Game 포기선언(아마, 경제적인 요인 때문…)으로 실제로 이루어지지 못한 점이 가슴 아프고 많이 아쉬울 수 밖에 없는 프로젝트였다.

Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Not far from the airport, there was a common land surrounded by 4 art universities, including a circus university. After being elected to host the Asian Games, Vietnam wanted to create a landmark popular among young generations, a go-to place for young people like the Dongsungdong Daehakro Streets in Korea. A place where art, culture, and entertainment coexist. A place where movies, plays, art bookshops, art stores, unique cafes, conventions, exhibitions, and various food are gathered in one place. We pictured young generations naturally gathering around and filling the place with youthful energy and passion, which was what the Vietnam government wanted as well. After numerous discussions with the Vietnamese Minister of Culture, officials, and CJ Entertainment, we decided to remodel and reinterpret the existing swimming pool into an outdoor theater and an area for various festivals. Numerous entry points and circulations were planned out for easy access from all 4 universities. After looking around the art universities, I believed that rather than just taking classes and managing grades, actively joining and seeking for various experiences like a true art school will greatly prepare oneself as an artist or a designer. Furthermore, I wanted the area to become a unique space where students could get along with tourists or young athletes attending the Asian games to share information, and experience as well as learn new cultures through the Make-a- Friend program. Intermodal containers(not a real container, but a look alike) were joined, overlapped, and split at various points to create gaps and form an overall shape. Unlike the life at typical school campuses, the high ceiling height and openness created by one unit overlapping the other provide diverse and dynamic areas to enjoy. Busking, performances, and other events were made possible by introducing sunken spaces. The rooftop was a space with greenery, where people can take a stroll or relax as well as play activities, such as inline skating in nature. With hopes that art school students can get discounts…supply stores that sell almost every type of art and design material and books are scattered across four floors. Also, there are 10 theaters by CJ Entertainment. Between floor levels and spaces, F&B, cafes, various sized Asian, and European dining spots were strategically placed in a stylish manner, insuring a competitive grand volume as a joint cinema town. Also, I wanted Green markets to be held on weekends at the town square, where people sell fruits and vegetables as well as homemade food, such as bread, cookies, and jam. A place where young generations enjoy going to, and a place to encounter various design festivals and events. It was a project in which I hoped to be recognized as a go-to cultural space among designers. However, it was truly sad that all the effort and dreams did not become a reality because the Vietnamese government withdrew as a host for the Asian Games (probably because of economic reasons…). It was a project full of resentment.
