여행이란 한 권의 책과 같지 않은가?
항상 다음이 기대되는 흥미로운 이야기 같다. 팔레스 호텔은 강남 최초의 특급호텔이라는 역사성을 갖고 있는 호텔이다. 하지만 주변에 들어선 대규모 특급호텔들 속에서 그 상징성마저 희미해졌다. 우리는 이 호텔이 위치해 있는 서래마을의 프렌치적 감성을 테마로 파리의 뒷골목이라는 이야기를 써나가길 원했고, 그 파트너로 사진작가 김중만의 손을 잡았다. 전 객실에 그의 작품을 걸기로 한 것이다. 김중만씨는 팔레스 호텔만을 위해 Paris로 가서 작업을 했다. 호텔의 감성언어를 파리의 이야기로 시작했다면 공간의 언어는 디딤, 여밈, 스밈이라는 우리의 전통적 공간언어로 다양한 형태의 흐름을 만들고 싶었다. 디딤의 컨셉은 우리 대청마루처럼 단 차이로 나타났고 벽면과 한 구조로 이루어진 긴 선반은 여행객이 자유롭게 짐을 놔둘 수 있는 공간으로 비워져 있다. 공간의 어디든 이용객이 사용할 때 가장 편한 자리가 곧 짐이 놓여있을 자리이기 때문이다. 여밈은 옷자락을 여미듯 공간과 공간을 잇는 공간 소통의 이야기이다. 화장실과 침실의 공간의 벽면은 하나의 통일된 마감재를 사용해 공간의 연속성을 부여하고 있다. 스밈은 공간과 공간이 See-Through 되는 이야기이다. 모퉁이가 벽이 아닌 투명한 유리를 통해 시야를 확보하게 하고 때로는 고풍스러운 목재의 살과 살의 틈 사이로 침실 안에서 거실을 넘겨다 보는 기법을 통해서 제한된 공간이 넓고 풍부해지고, 그로 인해 공간과 공간의 소통을 돕는 기능을 하게 하는 것이다. 이제 이 프로젝트의 완성과 함께, 팔레스 호텔이 강남 최초의 특급호텔이라는 의미있는 상징성과 함께 팔레스만의 호텔 이야기를 들려주었으면 한다.




Isn’t traveling like a book? It is like an engaging story everyone gets excited about what will come next. The Palace Hotel is a hotel with historical significance because it was the very first 5-star hotel in Gangnam district. However, after various other 5 star hotels were built over the years at the district, that significance has faded. We decided to incorporate French sentimentality of Seorae Village into our concept to write a story about alleyways of Paris. Thus, we partnered with Photographer Jung Man Kim. We decided to hang his work in every suite, and solely for this project, Kim flew to Paris to work on the project. Starting off setting the hotel’s sentimental language with a story of Paris, I wanted to use Korean traditional spatial philosophy, such as ‘Didim’ (stepping), ‘Yeomim’(closing/joining), and ‘Seumim’(permeating), as the hotel’s spatial language to create various flow of forms. In the concept of ‘Didim’(Stepping), elements of Daecheong maru (Korean traditional ventilated wooden floor) were implemented through changes in elevation, and the long shelf connected to the wall as unified structure is emptied out so that travelers can leave their luggage or personal belongings. This is because, whichever space it is, space users feel most comfortable with is where luggage should be placed. ‘Yeomim’ (Closing/joining) is a story about spatial communication between connecting spaces, which is similar to how clothing fabrics overlap over one another. Walls in the bedroom and bathroom were finished with same materials which give spatial continuity. ‘Seumim’(Permeating) is a story about spaces becoming see-through. Corners are finished with glass instead of walls to extend the view. Sometimes, spaces like the bedroom can see the living room through antique wooden vertical blinds to enrich and expand the given limited space, which ultimately aids communication between spaces. Now with the project completed, I hope the Palace Hotel starts telling its own original story along with its significance of being Gangnam’s first 5 star hotel.
