단원구 성곡동 선도전기는 한전이나 철도중심의 GIS 개폐기(진공차단기)를 생산하는 전문기업으로 반월공단 제1공장에 이어 제2 공장과 제2 사옥이 필요했다.
인간 + 자연 + 일터
인간과 자연이 어우러지는 일터 속에서, 환경을 생각한다는 것이 제2 공장의 목표였다. 즉 자연과의 교감을 통해서 좋은 일터를 만들어 따뜻하고 포근한 환경을 만들어 나가는 것이다. 공원부지를 곁에 둔 우리의 사옥부지는 이러한 환경을 만들어 나가는데 좋은 조건을 갖추고 있었다. 식물이 가득한 실내와 이동하는 건물과 건물 사이에서도 직원들은 여러 곳의 자연을 마주하며 하루의 피로를 조금이나마 덜어낼 수 있게 될 것이다.  로비에는 계단 강의실이 있다. 반월공단 제1 공장 로비 (소파를 배치하고 리셉션공간이 되게 하는...)와는 다르게 이곳의 로비는 계단 강의실로 성격을 달리했다. 이러한 시도는 모험이었으며 이 모험이 틀리지 않았다는 결과를 얻을 때 까지는 꽤 많은 기다림과 심적인 고뇌가 따랐다. 더 많은 시간을 계단의 디테일과 마감에 쏟아야 했다. 강의실을 위해 지하 한 층을 더 파서 들여야 하는 경비를 환경조성을 위해, 가든에 투자하여 맞바꾸는 아이디어는 결국엔 꽤 괜찮은 선택이었던듯 싶다. 이것은 아름답고 긴 여정이었다. 이 여정을 이해해주고 배려해준 건축주의 선택이 고맙기 그지없다. 공장동 앞 façade 그리고 공장동 옆 공간에 켜를 두고 메탈라스로 double skin한 곳에 등나무를 심었다. 등나무 줄기는 곧 그곳들을 감아 올라갈 것이다. 등나무는 좋지않은 환경에서도 잘 적응하고 무척 빨리 자란다. 2~3년 후 어느늦은 5月 쯤이면, 보라색 등나무 꽃이 공장동을 허드러지게 둘러 쌓을 것이다. 그때쯤이면, 꽃들은 자신의 아름다움으로 우리를 위로하고 미소짓게 할 것이다. 따라서 100m가 넘는 공장동에는 등나무 꽃이 스크린처럼 펼쳐지고 제주도산 팽나무와 Grass 가든이 드넓게 펼쳐진다. 모닝그라스와 그린라이트 같은 억새는 바람이 부는대로 흔들리며 여름을 더욱 시원해 보이게 할 것이며, 직원들의 점심 후 산책길로서도 사랑을 받게 될 것이다. 이렇듯 정원은 놀라울 정도로 많은 것을 베풀어준다. 이곳에서 직원들은 물론 지나는 사람들 또한 많은 이야기를 나눌 것이며 그러한 여름날의 추억을 잊지 않게 될 것이다.

SEONDO ELECTRIC, based in Seonggokdong Danwongu, is a company specializing in the manufacture and delivery of heavy electrics, such as Gas Insulation System (GIS), Vacuum Insulation Systems, and other high voltage switchgears, for major companies like KEPCO and railroad companies. After their 1st factory in Banweol Industry Complex, the company required further expansion through a new 2nd factory and a second office building.  
Human + Nature + Workplace
The goal for the 2nd factory was to think of the workspace as an environment where humans and nature can coalesce in harmony. In short, the goal was to create a warm, inviting place that enabled fluid interactions with nature for a good working environment. Fortunately, located next to a park, the site had everything we needed to create such an environment. With indoor spaces filled with greenery and nature outside, employees will face nature in various spaces and relieve stress throughout the day. There is a lecture hall located in the lobby. Unlike the first Banweol factory lobby (where sofas were placed with a reception area…), this lobby carries a different identity by having a lecture hall. This kind of experimentation was a venture, and it required a considerably large amount of anticipation and dedication to get the results that proved my voyage was not wrong. More hours had to be spent on the details and finishes of the staircase. The idea of reallocating the budget, initially for underground excavation of an additional floor for a lecture space, on gardens for landscaping purposes was, ultimately, a pretty good decision. It was a long, delightful journey. I am thankful for the client’s deep understanding and consideration for this journey. On the front of the factory façade and side of the factory where an extra layer of expanded metal sheets are installed as double skin, we planted Wisterias. Japanese wisteria stems will soon wrap their way up. The wisteria adapts quickly and grows fast even in harsh environments. Within 2~3 years, on a summer day around May, the factory will be surrounded by purple wisteria flowers. By that time, flowers will console us with their beauty and put smiles on our faces. Like a screen, wisteria flowers will cover the 100-meterlong space of the factory, and garden filled with grass and Chinese Hackberry from Jeju-island will wrap the entire area. Poaceae, such as Morning light grass and Greenlight, swiveling in the wind makes summer seem cooler, and it will also become a promenade beloved by employees going out for an after-lunch stroll. Likewise, the garden has so much to offer. Not only employees, but also people passing by will share many stories, and those summer days will become unforgettable memories.
