경기도 광주시 도척면 태화산 자락에 자리한 25,000평(82,500m²) 곤지암 밸리. 의료기 사업을 하는 클라이언트 부부는 20 여년 전 이곳에 들어와 땅을 고르고 풀을 뽑으며 곤지암 밸리를 조성했다고 했다. 세미나나 MT가 가능한 리조트 숙소를 비롯, 당뇨 및 고관절 환자를 위한 요양원. 힐링 세미나동, 카페…등 5-6개동의 건물동이 자연숲 곳곳에 자리잡은 복합 리조트 타운이었다. 클라이언트 부부는 한국색채 연구소 원장인 지인을 통해 이곳에 새 생명을 불어 넣고 싶다고 전해왔다. 무언가에 정체되어있어 실마리를 풀고 싶어 하는 것 같았다. 어디에 새로운 에너지를 집중해야 하는지 파악해야 했다. 문제 해결을 잘 하려면 문제의 본질이 무엇인지 명확하게 정의를 내려야 했다. 사실 곤지암 Valley는 깔끔하게 잘 정리된 곳이었다. 크게 문제점이 있거나 단점이 돋보일 만큼 어색하지도 않았다. 왜 그들은 현재 단계에서 갇혀있다고 생각했을까? 의료기 사업의 시작부터 지금까지의 과정을 담은 기념관을 짓고 싶어했고 62개의 병실을 갖춘 제법 큰 요양원을 어디에 신축해야 할 지 또 카페를 비롯 이미 지어진 건물의 활성화…등 풀어야 할 숙제가 제법 있었다. 비옥한 無? 일단은…남아있는 땅을 비워두기로 했다. 정갈하게 정리된 꽃밭 가든 보다는 좀 더 자연스런 정원, 들판 같은 초원으로...즉 영국들판의 meadow를 곳곳에 조성하기로 했다. 되도록 신축은 피하고, 있는 건물을 재활용해 클라이언트 두 분이 정착하기까지의 긴 여정을 잘 담아내자고 했다. 특히, 이곳에 정착할 때 최초에 지은 집 앞 뒷 마당은 가든과 꽃밭으로 잘 조성해 의료기기 전시장 및 생활 박물관으로 재탄생 시키고자 했다. 숙소로 사용하고 있는 힐링하우스는 선큰가든을 잘 활용해 경사가든과 재배치를 통해 작은 음악회를 여는 장소로 적극 유도하였다. 옥상에는 영화상영관 및 자연속의 숙소와 어울리는 녹색테마 휴게공간을 두어 힐링이 절로되게 계획하였다. 사계소국과 수레국화 같은 들꽃과 함께 그라스 가든이 경사지를 메워 은빛물결을 이루고 병정처럼 서있는 메타세콰이어 나무 사이에서 작은 결혼식이 열리곤 하는 지극히 자연스러운 풍경 또한 그려나갔다. 원형 담벼락으로 둘러싸여있는 힐링센터는 아이들이 자연스레 뒹굴며 책을 읽고 때론 세미나…등이 가능한 Zone으로 다시 구성하였고… 둘러싸여있는 벽 아래에서는 실내악 연주를 비롯, 편안히 반쯤은 누워 영상음악을 보며 와인이나 차 한잔 마시는 휴게 공간을 제시하였다. 클라이언트 두 자녀 중 한 분은 플루티스트이다. 그녀는 2016년부터 매년, 제임스 골웨이와 함께 매트 듀포르, 피터 루카스…등 세계적인 거장들을 대거 초청 2022 년 7주년을 맞이하는 국제음악제를 이곳 곤지암에서 열곤하는 창립자이자 총감독이다. 그녀가 말하기를 플루트라는 악기에 집중하여 음악사적 의의를 조명하는 페스티벌을 곤지암 플루트 페스티벌이 유일하다고 한다. 이제 곤지암 밸리는 음악 축제와 페스티벌, 힐링캠프와 각종 세미나, 숲 해설가와 함께하는 힐링숲 여행, 실버캠프, 그 중에서도 작은 음악회 장소로서 숲과 그늘이 제공되어 연주회 장소로서는 최상의 감성공간이 되었으면 한다. 곤지암 밸리 설립자이자 갤러리 관장은 곤지암 밸리만의 4계절을 이렇게 표현한다. 봄에는 활짝 핀 꽃을 여름에는 푸른 생명력을, 가을에는 알록달록 물든 대자연의 풍성함을, 겨울에는 눈 덮인 동화 속 한 장면을 볼 수 있는 곳이라 했다. 곤지암 밸리에 들어서면 길게 심호흡부터 하자 지금처럼 공기가 절실한 적이 있었던가? 나는 여전히 미지의 영역을 꿈꾸고 있다. 아름다운 영역 그린이 있어 더욱 아름다운 곳. 그린으로 몸과 마음이 치유되는 곳. 음악이 있어 남다른 향기와 낭만이 있는 그 곳 – 곤지암 밸리는 그렇게 해왔고 충분히 기쁨을 누릴만한 숲으로 발전해나갈 것이다.

The 82,500m² Gonjiam Valley is located on the foot of Mountain Taehwa at Docheokmyeon, Gwangjusi, Gyeonggi Province. The client couple, whom are in the medical business, came to the site 20 years ago and started creating Gonjiam Valley by leveling the soil and pulling out weeds. It is a resort town complex composed of 5-6 buildings scattered throughout the forest. The buildings include a resort for guest rooms, seminars, and retreats, a nursing home for patients with diabetes or hip joint complications, a Healing Seminar Wing, café, and other facilities. With the desire to give new meaning and life to the place, the client couple contacted me through a friend, who was the chief director at Korea Color Convergence Institute. They seemed like they were stuck and eager to solve the problem. We had to carefully analyze where to focus this new energy. In order to resolve the issue without any problems, we had to first clearly identify the nature of the issue. Upon visiting, Gonjiam Valley was actually a neatly organized place. There were no major problems or awkward points that stood out as short comings. Why do they think they are caught in a phase? There were various tasks to undertake including the couple’s request for a memorial museum that carried their entire medical business history, location planning for a fairly big new nursing home that holds 62 rooms, and revitalization of existing buildings including the café. Fruitful 無(nothingness)? For now…we decided to leave the rest of the land blank. Rather than a neatly organized flower garden, we decided to create a courtyard that carries a more natural feeling. Grassland with characteristics of a field... In short, we decided to create English meadows throughout the area. We tried to avoid new construction, instead, repurposed the existing building to carefully portray the couple’s long journey towards settlement here at Gonjiam. Especially, the very first house built on site when settling down was planned to become a medical equipment showroom and museum with its front and back yards transformed into a garden and flower garden. Through rearrangement and utilization of the existing slope gardens and sunken gardens, we promoted the healing house, which was originally used as sleeping quarters, as a space to hold small musical concerts. On the rooftop, we created a theater space and a greenthemed relaxing area that goes along with the existing sleeping quarters that sits in nature to induce natural healing. By filling a slope with grass gardens filled with wild flowers, such as Rock daisies and Cornflowers, we transformed the slope into silvery waves, where natural moments such as small weddings can take place among the Metasequoia trees standing upright like soldiers. The Healing Center, surrounded by a circular stacked stone wall, is designed so that children can freely frisk about and read books, and sometimes becomes a space where seminars can take place… Below the area surrounded by a circular stacked stone wall, we proposed a space where people can lay back and watch movies, listen to music, or even hold an indoor concert in a relaxing manner with a glass of wine or tea. One of two of the clients’ child is a flutist. She is the founder and lead director of the annual International Music Festival at Gonjiam Valley, which faces its 7th anniversary as of year 2022. Every year since 2016, she invites various internationally renowned musicians, such as James Galway, Mathieu Dufour, and Peter-Lukas Graf. She mentioned that Gonjiam Flute Festival is the one and only musical event that solely focuses on flute and ponders about its significance in relation to history of music. From here and on, I hope Gonjiam Valley becomes the highest form of sensible space for music festivals, healing camps, various seminars, healing forest journeys with a forest narrator, silver camps, and last but not least, for small forest concerts with natural shades. The founder of Gonjiam Valley, who is also the gallery owner, described 4 seasons at Gonjiam Valley as a place where one can see fully blossomed flowers in the spring, lively green energy in the summer, colorfully tinted Mother Nature’s abundance in the fall, and a fairy tale-like scenery covered with snow in the winter. Have we ever been this desperate for clean air? Let’s take long deep breathes when entering Gonjiam Valley. I still continue to imagine about uncharted territories. A beautiful space that becomes even more elegant with the presence of green. A place where body and mind are cured by green. A place where unique scent and romance soar up from music – Gonjiam Valley has done it so far, and will continue to flourish as a forest that raises happiness.
