진도 자연과 들녘
비록 서울에서 멀긴 하지만 아직 많이 개발이 되지 않은 자연 그대로가 남아있어 더욱 아름다운 진도. 지역의 상징물이 된 진돗개는 물론 신비의 바닷길(모세의 기적같이 바닷물이 갈라지는..)을 비롯 명량대첩 축제 등 다양한 문화체험이 가능한 신비로운 섬이다. 우리의 클라이어트는 이곳에서 자라고 성공한 사업가였다. 안타깝게도 폐교가 되어 지금은 비어있는 의신 초등학교 분교가 있는 부지를 오래 전부터 소유하고 있는 그는, 이곳을 남다르게 개발하여 진도의 의미있는 명소를 만들고 싶어했다. 우리는 초등학교 빈 교실을 사라져가서 안타까운 곳이 아닌, 감각이 되살아나는 추억의 감성소비가 가능한 곳으로 탈바꿈하여 가칭 ‘자연과 들녘’ 이곳의 핵심역할을 하게 하였다『. 학교교실 중심에는 기존보다는 높은 천정고의 글라스하우스 공간을 새롭게 끼워넣어, 스페이스 마케팅 즉, 이곳을 거쳐가서…비즈니스맨으로 활약중인 그들의 사업아이템 – 예를 들면 가구, 조명, 그림, 의류…등의 브랜드를 홍보하고 세일즈하는 스페이스 텔링존이라 할 수 있겠다.』 유난히 긴 복도 (예전 학교는 늘 그랬다.)는 조명과 그린을 반복 사용함과 동시에 교실 앞 사이사이마다 준비된 교실 안 공간을 예측 가능한 디스플레이를 하여 복도에 집중하게 하였다. 교실은 도자기 체험 및 그릇판매, 커플링 제작 가능한 은세공 공간, 가든을 내다보며 꽃꽂이 배워보기, 향수 판매공간, 옛 추억을 돌이키는 추억의 팝송듣기와 LP공간…그리고 요가 공간으로 구성하여 이곳에 머무는 동안 다양한 상황을 스스로 연출하며 또한, 경험하며 친구간, 연인간, 가족간 정서적으로 유대관계를 이어갔으면 했다. 질 좋은 온천수를 담아 멀리 외부에서 오는 여행객은 물론, 진도 내에 거주하는 주민을 위한 곳으로 남녀 SPA를 학교 뒤에 배치하여 크게 드러내지 않게 하였다. 너무 큰 규모의 건축물들이 보이는 건 부담을 주기 때문이다. 그리고 전망 좋은 언덕을 배경으로 가족들의 휴식을 책임져줄 17동의 팬션을 낮은 언덕에서부터 자연스레 흩어 놓았다. 초등학교 아래로는 예전 계단을 수정하여 경사가든을 두었고…여행 중에도 각종 꽃나무 모종과 화분을 구입할 수 있게 한 그린하우스는 저수지를 앞에 두고 펼쳐지는 다양한 가든을 경험하고 난 후에는 자연스레 찾게 되는 곳이다. Hedge로 구분되어지는 등나무가든, 장미꽃 가든, 그라스 가든, 언덕에서 자라는 동백꽃을 큰 화분에 담은 동백꽃 가든, 드라이 가든, 대왕참나무 사이로 작은 결혼식, 음악회, 파티…등이 가능한 로맨스 가든. 그리고, 펜션에서 하룻밤 후 이른 아침 돌아보는 산책로 가든, 등이 자연과 들녘의 열두달을 책임져 줄거라 기대 했다. 나즈막한 언덕 한쪽 자락에 학교 앞 가든을 품어 앉는듯한 형태와 제법 큰 규모로 Circle Café를 두었다. 2층 규모이며 어느 곳 시야도 놓칠 수 없어 올 글라스로 마감 할 것이다. 그곳에선 가든을 넘어 언덕 위의 팬션들이 숨바꼭질하듯 초록빛들과 어우러져 훨씬 더 좋아 보일 것이다. Circle Café 그곳에서 시야를 조금만 돌려도 호수 풍광. 특히 저녁의 노을은 도시를 떠나 이곳에서 왜 차를 마시고 몇 일을 쉬었다 갈 만 한가에 대한 답이 될 듯 싶은 곳이다. 해서, 우리는 Sunset garden을 이번 프로젝트의 또 하나의 추억이 될 수 있게끔 진행을 해야 했다. 책 한 권을 들고 사색하고픈 개별 데크가든을 물가 곳곳에 두었고, 프로포즈나 결혼 기념일 행사…등이 어울리는 파빌리온을 비롯해 해가 질 때 쯤 저녁노을과 같은 색이 되게끔 에키네시아중에서도 Sunset 품종을 시작으로 붉은잎 국수나무, 자엽안개꽃, 가을이면 붉은색으로 변신해서 놀라움을 주는 그라스류인 꽃그령이 선셋가든 언덕을 붉게 물들게 계획하였다. 바쁜 도심 생활에서 벗어나 이곳 진도 방문하는 이들에게 여유로움과 낭만, 그리고 정원을 바라보며 미소를 짓는 모습~ 그 모습 그대로가 우리의 삶인 것처럼 느끼게 되는 곳. 작지만, 소소하지만… 또 하나의 진도의 명소가 되었으면 한다.
 

Despite the long distance from Seoul, Jindo island is a beautiful site where nature remains untouched because not much development has taken place. It is an mysterious island where one can experience various cultural experiences, such as the island’s iconic Jindo dog, mystical ocean road(parting of the sea like the miracles of Moses…), and the Myeongnyang Battle Festival. Our client is a successful businessman who was born and raised here at Jindo. As an owner of a land where an elementary school branch has unfortunately closed down, the client wanted to uniquely develop the land into a meaningful landmark of Jindo island. With the provisional name, ‘Nature and Field,’ we planned to make the school play a key role. Instead of leaving the school as a place lamenting about the things that have faded away, we decided to turn the empty class rooms into a space where old memories and senses can be relived through the use of nostalgic and sentimental elements『. A glass house with a ceiling height higher than the existing school building is slotted into the center of the existing classroom building for space marketing. In short, when passing through the area…it becomes a space-telling zone used for brand advertisements and sales of the client’s business items, such as furniture, lighting, picture, and clothing.』 The exceptionally long corridor(schools back then were like this.) is emphasized by using lighting, greenery, and display areas in a repeated manner. Each display booth was located between classroom entrances and utilized to help predict the classroom space and its contents. Classrooms are compose of spaces for a pottery class that also sells ceramics, a silverwork class for making matching couple rings, a floral class that carries a great view of the garden, a perfume sales area, an audio room that plays nostalgic pop songs joined by a vinyl record space, and a yoga class. While staying at the site, I wanted people to freely create and experience various stories so that they can create stronger emotional bonds between their lover, family, and friends. The Spa which provides high quality hot spring water for distant visitors as well as neighboring communities is placed behind the school to minimize its presence. This was because large scale buildings can be overwhelming. Also, setting the great hillside view as a backdrop, 17 lodges responsible for the comfort and relaxation of visiting families are scattered out naturally throughout the hill. The staircase in front of the elementary school was transformed in to a slope garden…and a greenhouse was planned where people can stop by during their travels to purchase various seeds and clay pots after naturally passing through diverse gardens placed next to a reservoir in the foreground. I looked forward on how the hedgedivided Wisteria garden, Rose garden, Grass garden, Camellia garden in which Camellias from the hillside were transplanted into large clay pots, Dry garden, Romance garden where small weddings, concerts, and parties are possible between the pin oaks, and lastly, the Promenade garden where people could takes a stroll in the morning after spending the night will take care of the 12 month cycle of ‘Nature and Field.’ A considerably large Circle Café sits on the foot of a hill with a shape that hugs the garden located in front of the school building. It is a two-story building finished with glass on all sides because we couldn’t afford to lose any of the excellent scenery. From the building, lodges on the hill across the garden play hide and seek among the greenery which creates an even better view. Even the slightest turn at the Circle Café gives a view of the river. Especially, ray of sunset in the evening can be the reason why one should take a break from the urban life to spend a few days here relaxing with a cup of tea. Thus, we had to plan the Sunset garden as another element of the project where people can make unforgettable memories. Private deck gardens where people would want to bring a book and meditate are placed near the waterfront, and a pavilion suitable for proposals or wedding anniversaries is prepared as well. Also, along with Echinacea Sunset that matches the color of the evening sunset, Ninebark(Lady in red), Royal Purple Smokebush, and Purple Love Grass that surprises people with its red tone during autumn seasons are planted to paint the Sunset garden hill in red. Those who visit Jindo to escape from the busy urban lifestyle will experience relaxation, romance, and smiling faces when looking at gardens. A place where those moments feel like our actual lives. Small and simple… Yet I hope it becomes another popular landmark of Jindo island.
