난리후는 중국남단 하이난 섬에 있다. 우리나라 남쪽에 있는 큰 섬 제주도와 같은 인기 휴양지이다. 단지면적은 1,223,700m² (37만평)이며, 1차, 2차, 3차로 진행하는 계획이었다. 주변에 국가지정 보존녹지가 있으며 골프장과 호수(남려호)를 배경으로 호텔, 풀빌라, 타운하우스, 클럽하우스를 기획하고 배치하는 Master Plan 이다. 처음 현장에 도착했을 때 물가 가장자리와 숲 사이로 고사리가 하나씩 보이기 시작했으며, 그 수가 점점 많아지는걸 느끼는 순간… 보존녹지로 지정된 숲으로 한걸음에 달려가보았다. 눈앞에 펼쳐진 광경. 그건 놀라움이었다. 우리나라 제주도 곶자왈이 연상 되는 고사리와 이끼 낀 바위들 그 위로 음지식물 등이 군락을 이루며 상상도 못 할 풍경이 펼쳐져 있었다. 나의 돌발행동에 의아해있던 클라이언트와 일행에게 돌아와 나의 일성(一聲)은 “내 디자인 컨셉은 나왔다. 이 땅이 그것을 말해주었다.” 였다. 고사리(Fern)는 공룡시대 이전의 고생대 식물 아닌가? 시간의 흐름은 그 자체가 역사인 만큼 오랜시간을 이곳에서 자라 자기만의 큰 영역을 이루고 대표식물이 된 그 영적 신비함은 나에게 큰 디자인의 모티브가 되었다. 더군다나, 이 사업 의뢰를 한 중국의 건설회사는 신생회사인 만큼, 태고적부터 시대적 영물인 고사리와 연(緣)이 되어 관계맺는 것은 큰 의미가 있다고 믿었다. 고사리는 Hotel Façade에 디자인 영감을 주었고 오랜 시간의 신비스러움은 호텔객실의 입면 디자인을 완성해 주었으며 Fern Layer의 컨셉으로 골프장 클럽하우스의 외관을 디자인해 나갔다. 예를 들면 Fern의 잎사귀를 닮은 클럽하우스의 레이어 된 월(wall)은 빛의 움직임에 따라 다양한 그림자를 제공해 주는 것이다. 주택단지는 크게 두 개의 녹지축으로 구별되어진다. 한쪽은 습지와 암석의 Rock garden 축이며 또 다른 축은 Water garden의 Paradise가 디자인 컨셉이다. Welcome center에서 단지로의 접근이 시작되고 물이 중심축을 이루며 순환이라는 자연의 에너지를 단지 내에 제공해주려는게 목적이었다. 자연지형을 이용한 계단식 주거형태도 단지 내 또 다른 축을 이루고 주민들은 그로인해 다양한 보행경로를 경험하게 된다. 처음 현장을 방문 했을 때 다가온 느낌과 주변의 모든 것들은 건축가에겐 매우 소중하다. 여러형태의 정원과 탐스런 꽃나무, 작은 화산석의 물성 또한 고스란히 디자인의 원천이 된다. 초록. 지상에 최초로 만들어진 태고의 빛깔. 고사리는 그렇게 하이난 섬 프로젝트의 ONE CONCEPT으로서 처음부터 끝까지 채워져 나갔다.

Nalihu is an area in Hainan island located at the southernmost point of China. Hainan is a popular vacation spot which is similar to Jeju island on the southern side of Korea. The 1,223,700m²-large site was planned as a 3 phase-project. The Master Plan was to plan and decide locations for the hotel, pool villa, town house, and club house which has the golf course and lake(Nanliho) in the back ground, and greenbelt in the vicinity. When arriving at the site for the first time, I was able to spot ferns here and there along the waterfront and near the forest. When noticing the growing number... I immediately ran into the greenbelt forest. The scene presented in front of me was absolutely stunning. Similar to our Gotjawal forest in Jeju island, ferns, moss covered rocks, and other shade plants were growing in clusters creating a spectacle. Returning to my client and group, confused by my abrupt actions, my first words were, "I have come up with a design concept. This land spoke to me." Aren't ferns ancient botanicals predating periods of the dinosaurs? As flow of time is history itself, the spiritual fascination of the plant that grew for ages, creating its own wide territory and becoming a main plant, became my main design motif. I also believed that there was a great significance in the relationship between the client, a fairly new Chinese construction company, and the ancient spiritual fern that formed an initial connection at the site. Fern gave design inspirations for the hotel façade, and its mysteriousness aided in completing the elevation design of the hotel rooms. Furthermore, the exterior of the club house was designed with layers of fern as a concept. For instance, layered-walls of the club house that resemble fern leaves cast various shadows depending on the movement of light. The residential complex is largely composed of two green tracts of land. While one area is a rock garden comprised of marsh and rocks, the other portion of land is a water garden with a design concept of a paradise. The entry to the residential complex begins from the welcome center, where a water feature was arranged to act as a central axis. This was to provide circulation, a natural energy throughout the complex. The slope-cascade residences, designed according to the natural terrain, form other various different axes within the resident that allow people to experience various pathways. On the first visit, everything in the vicinity as well as feelings at the site are very precious to the architect. Differently shaped gardens, pleasant flowering trees, and even properties of small volcanic stones all become source of design. Green. The very first primordial tint formed on earth. From the beginning to the end, this was how fern became the one and only concept for the Hainan project.
